The people and the location are great. The beach is amazing, my son loved the pool (large, clean, nice overall). The room was acceptable, and the infrastructure is well maintained (keeping in mind it's Cuba), but OMG mosquitos and flies totally screwed the entire experience! May through September is the rainy season, and the insects are multiplying faster than the universe expands. Take as much mosquito spray as you can with you. Yes, you will stink with it because it is hot and humid outside but at least you will not be itching constantly. As to flies, well, be prepared to only eat in the snack bar because the buffet is one big bowl of flies. There is nothing you can do. They will land on your cutlery and dishes, glasses, your food, on yourself, they will even try to get into your mouth. Mirriads of flies! One can only imagine how unsanitary this is... but I will give you a clue: myself and my family would spend a lot of time on the toilet shortly after every meal, and it lasted for a good half of our vacation there. We changed our food preferences and stopped eating at the buffet but it was too late. Maybe take a few bottles of pepto bismol with you too if you are going. Also, dear fellow Canadians, please STOP TIPPING WITH COINS! The staff will try their best to make you happier, and they won't tell you, but when you tip them with coins you might as well just throw them away because those are not convertible (not accepted by banks as currency). The best alcohol selection is at the lobby bar. The beach bar would be the second best, but it is closed at 4:00 pm. You will get a decent Cuba Libre or Rum-Coke at any bar though, not to mention the traditional selection of non-alcoholic drinks (I prefer the tonic). I feel really sorry about the buffet, but if you end up going at least you will be warned and prepared. The unprepared are doomed to be disappointed (and sick). Gillo is the best bartender, and Arlinkis (Anki) is the best waitress.
